Our Chef
Chef Marie-Aude Rose, one of the few Parisian chefs leading a kitchen in the United States, oversees Marcel 945 Madison Avenue’s menu of reinvigorated continental cooking. Previously of Pierre Gagnaire in Paris, Chef Marie partnered with Robin and Stephen Alesch of Roman and Williams to create the acclaimed downtown French restaurant La Mercerie and, more recently, La Mercerie Pâtisserie at 945 Madison.
History

MARCEL BREUER
One of modern architecture's internationally recognized masters, Marcel Breuer began his career designing furniture at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, where he produced chairs now considered 20th‑century classics. As an architect, Breuer pursued a philosophy he called “heavy lightness,” the idea of using monumental materials to create structures that feel weightless. His major works include UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the IBM Research Center in France, St. John's Abbey in Minnesota, and the Whitney Museum of American Art on Madison Avenue—his best‑known project in New York, where he maintained his practice for decades.
WHITNEY MUSEUM
The Breuer Building, at Madison Avenue and 75th Street, served as the third home of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Designed by Bauhaus-trained architect Marcel Breuer and completed in 1966, its bold, inverted granite form was a stark modernist departure for the neighborhood. Once controversial, it is now celebrated as one of New York’s most daring and iconic architectural landmarks.
TODAY
Sotheby’s now returns to Madison Avenue, establishing its global headquarters within this modernist icon. The building has been meticulously restored for the 21st century by Herzog & de Meuron to now house galleries, auction spaces, and the Marcel 945 Madison Avenue restaurant. Breuer’s vision endures, amplified for a new era of cultural dialogue.
